1875 Arctic Expedition

Extracts from the log of George Bryant
Boatswain, HMS Discovery
May 29, 1875

This is the log that UI a going to try and track if possible till we get safe back to the old country again. June 28th Sighted an iceberg for the first time. June 30th Sighted berg 200 feet high, distance aft 7 miles Temperature on the 25th of July was Water 30, the lowest it has been since we left at President. Harpoon a Unicorn on the 26th July July 27th Landed at depot from the Alert at 2am my watch. July 28th Glass down to -29. July 29th Land No.1 depot of Cape Sabine August 13th Middle watch landed B depot at Cape Trafalgar.

April 15th HM Ship Discovery was put in commission at Portsmouth. We store and provision from the 15th of April till the 28th of May and on the 29th at 4pm we sail from the jetty under the cheers of thousands of people both in boats and on land, when we got clear we made sail. 5.30pm Sent letters in by Mr Conabers Fathers at 8.45pm and then got the screw. May 30th Sunday 12am Admiral Cepple and staff came on board to look at the two ships 1am Left under three hearty cheers in the evening we got the screw down and furl sails 10pm Made sail on the starboard tack
