My interest in aviation began at about the age of 11 as the school I attended lay under the approach to Manchester Airport during the sixties. Though relatively quiet compared to today, it had a variety of visitors as charters or Heathrow diversions - memorable moments were a Rhodesian Air Services DC6, VP-YYR trundling in during a PE lesson! Tor-Air Sweden C-46 SE-CFE; when Heathrow was fogbound its diversions were always welcome as we never knew what to expect... lines of Pan American 707s, Middle East Airlines Comets, East African VC10s and many others which are now a faded memory; Summer charters such as Sterling Airways (Denmark) Balair, Adria and SAM (Italy) DC6Bs; Aviogenex (Yugoslavia) Tu134s and the 707s and DC8s of US operators such as World, Capitol, Overseas National, Trans Caribbean (later Trans International) and American Flyers (if anyone has any photos of the Electras and DC8s of the latter, please contact me!! Commercial aviation, airlines and airports have remained my main interest but it has now diversified to include current and historical airfields; World War 2 -Bomber Command and US Eighth Air Force. I try and keep up with worldwide commercial aircraft and airline developments and new routes, especially Manchester Airport, and will welcome hearing from anyone who shares my interests.
